About Us

We run our small Bed & Breakfast " The Retreat @ Le Grand Bois" (now rated 5* with Tripadvisor) which is also our home, as a "Retreat" from the hustle & bustle of modern life. We aim to provide a relaxing break in a comfortable home from home atmosphere, with the belief that our guests' needs are of the utmost importance, & are committed to meeting those needs. As a result, we have many repeat guests and referrals. We would welcome the opportunity to  invite you to Le Grand Bois, and provide you with a relaxing break with the best service possible in peaceful surroundings. There was a hotel in Miramont De Guyenne which has now closed (Hotel De La Poste). So we have become a little busier than expected, sooner than expected. Our guests list is becoming quite International with clients traveling from many countries not only from within Europe, but further beyond, we seem to appeal to a wide variety of customer base, & try to accommodate all their varying requests with pleasure.

About where we are; Miramont De Guyenne

Le Grand Bois is situated just on the Southern outskirts of the Mediaeval Bastide Village of Miramont De Guyenne in the beautiful department of Lot & Garonne, famous for many things including it's stunning countryside, it's rivers The Lot, & The Garonne, & the Canal De Garonne, which is the sister canal to the world famous "Canal Du Midi" & joins it near Toulouse, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to The Mediterraen Sea. Lot & Garonne is South of, but just next to the Southern areas of the Dordogne, (which is often now called Little England because of it's popularity with the British) & the East of Gironde (famouse for it's fantastic wine & wine villages). Each of these adjoining departments is only about 10 mnutes away from us here at Le Grand Bois, in what should be termed as the "Golden Triangle of South West France".

Not only is our property called Le Grand Bois, but so is the area that it is situated in, & just down the road within the boundary of Miramont De Guyenne there is a "Rue De Grand Bois" The agricultural area surrounding our property was also known as the " Vignes De Grand Bois" so we don't currently know if the property was originally a wine domain or not, but appears that it well could have been in times past. The Lot & Garonne is a wonderful place to visit, full of hilltop Bastide villages, with stunningly beautiful, & dramatically varying landscapes in all directions. The village of Miramont De Guyenne (A Royal Bastide) was an important place during the 100 years war & was fought over, & changed hands between the English & French several times during the period. The main reason for it's importance was it's strategic location at the centre of 6 important trade & transport routes. Today the village has remained primarily French, it has a Monday farmers type market, with local producers selling their wares, as well as all the normal market stalls, people come from all of the smaller villages & hamlets to the market & its quite busy in the summer & a very pleasant way to spend a morning. Miramont de Guyenne has several decent bars & restaurants, & more bakers than you would imagine it could ever need, there are also several small supermarkets around the area providing most of what you could want or need. During the summer months Miramont De Guyenne has several festivals & Fetes, these include "The BastidArt" which is festival of music & street art, with clowns, bands, ensembles & acts of all kinds, the whole of the village seems to get involved, & its a great time to visit, with different things going on each day & evening, often late in to the night for those who wish carry-on partying. For those who want a calmer evening, they can retreat to Le Grand Bois & have a drink or coffee on one of our terraces, or lounge area. Le Grand Bois is a great place to make your base for a weekend break or a longer holiday-vacation period, The area is perfect for cycling holidays with many proposed routes, some of the longer routes are also suitable for motorbikes & cars too, with so much to see in the area, you'd need to spend at least a week just to get a taste of what the region has to offer people of all tastes & ages.

The Retreat @ Le Grand Bois, & Miramont De Guyenne are perfectly placed between two of the most important of South West France's airports, those of Bergerac & Bordeaux, Bergerac being about 25 minutes away to the North, & Bordeaux about an hour away up the A62 motorway, slightly to the North West, so easy access via Paris from destinations outside of Europe. There are two other airports within travelling distance these include the new airport at Brive, both under 2 hours to the North East & the major international at Toulouse, about 2 hours to the South East, all these airports have direct flights to & from the United Kingdom, which is just one of the reasons the region, of Aquitaine, is so very popular with visitors from all around the world. Besides the history of the area, there is the excellent, food & wine, plus the weather is absolutely wonderful, with long hot sunny days, warm pleasant evenings, & when it does rain here we tend to get it at night, unlike slightly further north, where we have spent two or three weeks on holiday in the past having seen little or no sun at all, just rain & we're talking less than a couple of hours drive by car.
